Artist Statement
From a young age, I have been fascinated by change. It is a force that moves us; we may take it by the reins or be swept away in its current. I wish to grapple with the idea of change and how it creates both beauty and destruction, and challenges us to become the best - or worst - versions of ourselves.
I explore the relationships between human and technology in my piece 'Integration' and other related works. Our lives today are so entwined with our use of technology that we, in essence, become it. Much like computers possess both mechanical parts and a cloud-based interface, humans consist not only of their flesh, but of the realm of the consciousness. Intangible and yet intrinsic. I examine the dichotomy of our inter-connected world. While our dependency on technology may have negative consequences, it is also a means of greater communication and globalization than ever before.
In my 'Reflections' print series I draw from my experiences abroad as an exchange student and traveller-at-heart. Images are quite literally reflected, rotated, superimposed, and subtly changed to create a distinct feeling of longing. The images used are often derived from my own photos taken while abroad, and explore a range of techniques from laser-engraved wood-block relief, to photo-polymer intaglio pieces.
Color gradients, light, and form have also founded the basis for many of my figurative drawings and paintings, and I continue to explore it in my light-phenomena based triptych "Reflective".
The many ways in which the world is reflected back at us both physically and psychologically through memories, nostalgia and ephemera ultimately ties my body of work together.
